Greystone Athletic U17's vs Mid Annandale (U17)

February 21, 2016
Score: 3 - 1

Match Report

Today’s game saw an in-form Mids team visit Greystone on the back of an excellent win against Galloway Thistle last week. Greystone fielded a familiar line-up with Callum coming back into midfield the only change from last week.

The early signs were good with Greystone  starting brightly and playing some good possession football. Keir and Liam were making good penetrating runs, the midfield were on top and the defence solid so it was no surprise when we took a deserved early lead. Mids best opportunities were from set-pieces but unfortunately their delivery into the box let them down on too many occasions. Connor unfortunately picked up an early ankle knock that hampered him and was replaced by Niall, who adapted to the pace of the game quickly and put in another good all round performance. Greystone went 1-0 up when Keir finished from close range from a corner. The forwards continued to get in behind the Mids back 4 and from a quick counter attack Keir burst down the left and drilled a low cross to the 6 yard box which was turned into his own net by a retreating Mids centre back with Liam lurking behind him.

Half time Greystone Athletic 2 – 0 Mids

The second half carried on much as the first with Greystone on top and it was no surprise when we went 3 up with a cool finish from Liam. Thomas replaced his brother Duncan on the right hand side and continued where he left off delivering some more high quality crosses into the box. Mids then went down to 10 men when a high challenge on Ben, who had replaced Callum, was deemed a straight red by the referee. This seemed to stir Mids into action and they put together their best period of play in the match.  A free kick for Mids ,after a innocuous foul from Keenan resulted in him receiving a very harsh booking, eluded Ryan in the Greystone goal and Mids had their tails up at 3-1. The referee then evened things up by producing another straight red card, to the amazement of crowd, coaches and players for a challenge by Ben which was a yellow at most. This led to a period of end-to-end play for the final few minutes with Struan making a spectacular goal line clearance to keep the final score 3-1.

This was a very good all round display from Greystone who restricted a good Mids team to very few chances and always looked to create when in possession.
