Today saw us make the short journey to Maryfield for a Ryedale Cup semi-final against Heston Rovers. Heston have been improving over the season so a tight game was anticipated. The pitch has always proved a difficult surface and so it proved with both sides facing a struggle to get the ball under control.
Greystone started at a high tempo and took the lead within 3 minutes with Keenan scoring with a header, however, Heston hit back quickly with Greystone giving them far too much space and time. Greystone were exerting a lot of pressure and Keenan scoring again this time at the second attempt with a neat back heel.
Heston Rovers 1 – 2 Greystone Athletic
Ben replaced Duncan for the start of the second half with Niall having come on for Mo in the first. We soon added to our tally with Liam finding the top corner of the net from close range albeit with his shin. Heston hadn’t read the script, however, and reduced the deficit with a lob over Ryan from a long ball. Greystone then started to dominate and stretched with Liam scoring with a great glancing header following a well worked short corner. Connor, Ross and Corey came on and more goals followed as Greystone took advantage of the spaces that were beginning to appear. A quick throw out from Ryan led to a great counter attack with Callum providing the finishing touch. He quickly added his second with a fine shot. Liam completed his second hat trick in 2 games with a volley. The final piece of scoring was a close range volley from Brodie from a corner.
Great to get through to another final!
A very good all round performance from Greystone who adapted to the conditions well and everyone putting in a good display. Team selection just gets more difficult each week as everyone is hitting good form at the right time with two finals coming up to round off the season.
