Away game against Heston Rovers this morning with overhead conditions perfect for football and underfoot conditions the absolute opposite. Heston have been improving as the season goes on and recent results plus a difficult pitch suggested that this would be a tricky fixture.
Greystone enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half and it was against the run of play when Heston took the lead after a fine run and shot eluded some fairly weak Greystone defending. Greystone continued to try to play football and create chances but just couldn’t find a finish. Another shock was in store when Heston went further ahead with a major assist from the pitch as an awkward bounce led to a sliced clearance and an open goal beckoned. Greystone kept carving out opportunities and finally scored with a fine cross from the left and header from Liam at the back post.
Half time Heston Rovers 2 – 1 Greystone Athletic
The start of the second half went according to the Greystone script with a goal inside 2 minutes. Greystone were getting joy from the flanks with Duncan putting some fine crosses from the right side as we began to heighten the pressure on the Heston goal, which was leading a charmed life. The goals started to come and my blood pressure began to come down. Fine finishes from Callum, Tom, Duncan and Keenan ensured a more comfortable end of the match.
Final score Heston Rovers 2 – 5 Greystone Athletic
A difficult day for football and it is to the boy’s credit that they stuck to their task and adapted to the conditions. It was a day when tiki-taka football was out of the window and replaced by more perspiration than inspiration. There were fine performances throughout in what was a real team performance, another demonstration that this squad has real strength in depth with everyone contributing to the cause.
Many thanks to Keith, Maurice and Heston for their hospitality and also thanks to referee Kieran Whalen.
