A beautiful sunny morning and a potentially tricky league fixture against Galloway Thistle this morning. Beautiful sunshine greeted us at Newton Stewart and a hope that the football would match the weather. A few changes to the normally settled line-up due to injury, illness and suspension, with Keenan breaking his wrist, Milo with tonsils like golf balls, Connor with an ankle knock, Keir suspended and Ross Young working, we were left a bit short on numbers but not on quality. This meant that Ross Bell started on the right, Duncan on the left, Thomas in central midfield joined by Niall and Patrick Callaghan coming into the starting line-up as well.
The team has been starting well in recent weeks and there was no change today as the excellent Callum Williams scored inside two minutes. This set the tone for the match with Greystone controlling the game with some great possession football. The pressure gradually told on Galloway with Liam scoring to make it 2-0 and then a moment of comedy when Mo strode forward to take a penalty after Ross was fouled in the area only to despatch the resultant spot kick into whatever the row is beyond row Z!! Thankfully we were not made to pay as Ross finished off a slick move with Duncan crossing for Liam who cushioned a header down to Ross who drilled a low shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.
Half time Galloway Thistle 0- 3 Greystone Athletic
The second half started with Ben replacing Niall and after 10 minutes Corey came on for Patrick but not before he headed in a fourth from a corner. Patrick can be pleased with a very good display in the centre of the park on his Greystone debut. Greystone continued to create chances with the Galloway keeper making some fine saves and some poor finishing meant that there was only another goal for Liam and finally a goal for Mo who had moved up front. It would be nice to keep a clean sheet for a change but it was not to be, with a battling Galloway scoring two, one a spectacular volley in the top corner. All in all a great day of football with everyone playing their part in a fine team performance. It’s all building to an exciting end to the season. Many thanks to Stan and Galloway for their hospitality and a very good refereeing performance from Ross Inger.
