Oh the deep joy of end of season games, the clash with the Queens game, impending exams and life in general meant call offs galore for this fixture against Galloway Thistle.
We took to the field without a recognised goalie, only one defender and most importantly only ten players!!! Niall made the mistake of confessing that he had played in goals when he was knee high to a grasshopper and that was good enough to earn the goalie’s shirt for the day.
The game was fairly even for the first 15 miutes, certainly Galloway enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but Greystone were getting behind the ball and keeping their shape well and this meant very few chances for the visitors. Unfortunately a lack of communication in defence led to a mix up amongst a quickly assembled back 4 and goalkeeper and Galloway scored with a header from a throw in on the left.
Greystone were more than holding their own now and deservedly equalised from a deflected free kick from Murray Campbell. They then shocked Galloway with a fine shot from Adnan finding the bottom corner of the net from 18 yards. 2-1 to the ten men of Greystone.
Robert Clyde arrived at high speed and quickly joined the fray and we were back to eleven players, a novelty these days!! This did lead to some confusion and much hilarity as the Galloway linesman thought that we were now playing with twelve men, after a quick recount, apologies and much embarassment the game continued with Galloway equalising before half time.
It was a case of deja vu in the second half with Greystone losing the initiative and conceding goals. The efforts of playing with 10 men caught up with us and led to us shipping 4 more goals with final score ending 6-2 to Galloway Thistle.
The effort from the boys was tremendous and there were stand out performances from Callum Williams, Milo Bown and Tom Armstrong, special mention to Danny and Murray who were playing their final games in youth football, Niall for being brave enough to stand in as goalkeeper, Adnan for again supplementing the numbers and scoring a fine goal, Robert for adding a blend of skill and physicality to the midfield, the twins for another good display , ending the season in fine form, and Shaun for a good shift at an unfamiliar left back position.
Thanks to all of you for all your efforts over the season and although we didn’t amass as many points as we would have liked what we have gained is a huge amount of experience which will be invaluable for next year.
