We took to the field today on a wet and windy May morning hoping to compete against a strong Terregles side in the semi final of the Rotary Cup.
The first half was a good display from Greystone with good combination play in midfield coupled with determined defending. Cross balls and long diagonal passes had proved difficult to defend against in previous encounters with Terregles but the boys had learned from this and defended much better in the first period. Not too many chances at either end until a free kick conceded on the edge of our box was duly despatched into the bottom corner, 1-0 to Terregles at half time.
The second half meant a reshuffle from Terregles which proved to be the turning point in the match with Tommy Goss coming off the Terregles bench and putting on a virtuoso display of attacking midfield play. We couldn’t get close enough to pressurize him and he helped himself to a hat trick with one memorable long range strike curling in to the top corner giving Ryan no chance in the Greystone goal.
The game was played in an excellent manner by both sides and refereed well by Bob Park. The only injury was to Niall’s right boot which disintegrated whilst firing a fine shot into the Terregles net. He duly hopped to the side line to be replaced by Shaun Milligan.
The final score seemed a bit harsh on Greystone, who put on a good display especially in the first half. Good luck in the final to a very accomplished Terregles side who played some good football allied to clinical finishing on the day.
