It’s that time of year again when the midweek games come along and getting enough players on the pitch becomes a real headache. So it proved on Thursday when a combination of injuries and deadlines for schoolwork meant that we were 6 players short for the visit to joint table topping Terregles!! Frantic phone calls ensued to try to get players, however, we arrived with only 10 players so an already difficult task became impossible.
The plan to frustrate a talented Terregles team for as long as we could was blown out of the water when we conceded a penalty for hand ball in the first minute! Further goals were conceded but everyone of the Greystone team were defending admirably, matching runs and putting in the tackles but wave after wave of pressure had to eventually take it’s toll. Amongst the periods of possession that Terregles enjoyed Greystone used the ball well and there were several good periods of combination play through midfield leading to shots on goal albeit from distance.
Half-time Terregles 4 Greystone Athletic 0
The second half followed the pattern of the first with Greystone defending manfully and determined to try to keep the score down. Four more goals were lost during this half with corners being particularly difficult to defend with Terregles aerial ability evident.
You always learn from adversity not just about football but character and what I learned was that the boys have got great mental and physical strength, they’ve got the bottle required to succeed and that will stand them in good stead in the future.
Thanks also to Adnan for standing in a the last minute to help, you did yourself proud.
Thanks to a very fine Terregles side, coaches Billy and Billy for their hospitality and playing the game in the right spirit.
