A very enjoyable game this morning against the other Greystone 17’s side. A combination of injuries and mysteries left us with 12 players this morning and a very quick reorganisation of the side was required. An unfortunate penalty provided Ryan Feely with an early test on his return to the side, and he proved to be a match for it pulling off a fine save diving to his left. The boys were adapting well to the new team shape and it came as a blow when Conor Gibson had to be subbed suffering from a knee injury. A resulting alteration meant Duncan Wright dropped back into midfield with Tom Armstrong coming on up front. The pressure began to build on Athletic and we were being pushed deeper and deeper as the half progressed and eventually a cross from the right resulted in Ross Findlater scoring with a header stealing in at the back post for Rovers.
Half time Greystone Athletic 0 Greystone Rovers 1
The second half began and Athletic were having a bit more possession with some neat passing in midfield from the Wright brothers beginning to pay dividends, although not creating many clear cut opportunities. The back line of Morgan, Brodie and Struan were keeping things tight with Niall providing protection in front of them and Callum and Milo working tirelessly on the flanks. Murray was always a threat and caused problems for the Rovers back three, supported well by Tom.
A long clearance from the Rovers defence allowed Matty Measor through on goal and he finished well. A third goal followed late on from Owen Welsh completed the scoring. Well done to John and his Rover’s team, the 3 points keeps up the pressure on Terregles at the top of the league, however, a lot of positives for Athletic with a performance that spoke volumes for the boys character, determination and no small amount of ability.
